The first cold spell of Winter 2010/11 will happen at the start of next week and could last all the way into the start of December. November has stayed wetter than previously thought as a couple of deep Lows have brought a lot of rain to Ireland but as the last one pushes away to end this week an area of High Pressure around Iceland is menacing in its plans. It looks like settling just to the North West of Ireland and the Winds will be East and then North at the end of the month bringing an increasing risk of snow to end the month.
The month of December still looks cold too but we still would not go as far as saying it will be as cold as other long range forecasters are predicting. An average temperature of around 4c would be the weathergossip consensus but this is a lot higher than other indexes so we stand corrected if need be. Certainly there will be some heavy frost and ice in this month and we just think that there will be some short interludes of milder weather bringing the temperature up by a degree or two. Single figure temperatures certainly look the norm for Ireland this Winter as opposed to 1998 for example when we has temperatures of 10 to 13c in parts of December and January.
As for this January 2011 it looks like being cold and unsettled with rain at times and some snow early in the month. After January it looks like conditions will get milder once again but its a long way off so the forecast will be updated once it gets completely inaccurate once more.

Early Winter Forecast - Cold and Unsettled
The forecast for the coming Winter season is for another cold one. It will not be as cold as last year in Ireland or the UK. 2009/2010 was the coldest Winter since 1962/63. So what exactly has the coming Winter season got in store and will we have a white Christmas?
Well initially lets start with November which we will use as the first month of the Winter. The coming November looks like it will be a mix between cool and cold weather. There will be rain at times but not the floods that occured in 2009. Lowest temperatures will be in the East of Ireland and overthe North and East of the UK. The end of November is when we will see the first risk of snow. Temperatures overall for the month of November look like they will be in single figures a lot of the time but perhaps a bit milder early on in the month. Rainfall for the month looks below normal and sunshine will be around the average. Frost will occur at times especially late in the month.
Moving on to the Christmas month and December is a month that brings a lot of excitement about the weather. Some people bet on the possibility of a white Christmas. It does not look like there will be snow this Christmas but there may be some frost that will make it feel crisp and Wintry. Early December will have continued the cold theme of late November but then as we reach the second half of the month the Atlantic fronts take hold once again. Temperatures will rise slightly for this and the overall temperature of the month will be just below average. Rainfall will be around the average and slightly above in some places. Sunshine is usually at a premium in December and the last month of 2010 will be no exception.
Early indications for January are for a mixed bag of weather. It will be cool and wet at times and there will be the odd night frost too but it will be nothing like the freezing January of 2010. In fact the average temperature will be above normal in some Southern parts. Sunshine will be normal and rainfall above normal.
And there you have it the Winter Forecast will be updated on a weekly basis and soon to come will be a Christmas blog with the odds of a White Christmas and more.
